MGB Anti-Roll Bars

Roger Searle

All,

Question #1.  Do early (mid-60s) Bs have anti-roll bars?  If not, does anyone have experience with the difficulty and improvement of adding one to these models?

Question #2.  Does anyone have experience with lowering a late model (1978) B.  I'm interested to know if it is difficult and worth it?

Happy New Year

Roger,
I can (sort of) answer #2. I had my GT lowered by Pete Cosmides. You could contact him about how easily it can be done. “Safety Fast!”

Thanks Steve.  Did the handling change?

Yes, very much so. At one time I had a 1967 roadster and after Pete lowered my GT it had the handling I remembered from the B.

Q1, I added a roll bar to my 75 roadster and it helped but as I understand there are differences in the diameter which result in different handling characteristics.

Q2, Moss sells a kit for lowering. I have not done it but supposedly it does result in improved handling. Just makes getting in and out a bit harder

Also Pete has retired so Sweeney might be your man.

I can't speak to MGBs, but yes, in general ant-roll bars really do help handling. Here's my TD at the Put-in-Bay races without an anti-roll bar (factory setup)...

Notice the rear wheel burying itself in the wheel arch! We were flat out, and I was pushing it hard to slide a bit to get the best turns, but the car just wouldn't slide for me.

Here's Kurt Byrnes on the same track, in his really trick TD (He says "Hey, I was just out for a drive when all these cars started chasing me!" 😆)

Notice how much flatter it rides - so much so that not one, but BOTH wheels come off.

Yeah, an anti-roll bar definitely helps if you're gonna push the car hard. 🙂  If not... well, it also makes the car ride a bit nicer through the curves.

Cheers,
Kevin

Roger , I lowered my '79 using the Moss kit.  I think it does handle better and I like the look !

Hi Roger,

I have a '66B and it has an ARB up front. I believe it is original to the car.

My GT has a lowering kit on it from Moss. Not to difficult.
Roll bars that only attach in the back are dangerous on roll over.

In my first reply on the first question You posted I miss understood anti roll bar. My knowledge of that it is called ant sway bar not anti roll bar.
They come in several sizes. They definitely make a difference the thicker they are. If you really want to change the handling, put one on the front and the back.
I put a 1” bar on the front of my MGC and a 3/4” bar on the rear. If they had done that at production the MGC would not have gotten the bad press at it’s introduction.
They are not difficult to install if you have the car on a lift. I replaced my 74.5 BGT’s to front sway bar to 3/4” and lowered the front with shorter coil springs (about 1 coil) and used the Moss 1” lowering kit. Really transforms the cornering.

You might also research Fab-tech and Dave Headley an MGB Specialist.

Thanks Jim.

I'm considering restomoding an early (Series 1) B.  And part of my interest is do these early Bs have anti-roll/sway bars.
