No-Reserve Ferrari GTO On Display
At Next Week's Monterey Pre-Reunion;
Bonhams' Thursday Sale Now 5 p.m.

Monterey, CA -- What's likely to be the most expensive car ever sold at public auction -- a no-reserve 1962 Ferrari 250 GTO -- will be on display for attendees at next weekend's Monterey Pre-Reunion vintage races at Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca.

Chassis 3851 GT will be on view at the Bonhams Turn 4 chalet in the race paddock Aug. 9-10. The car goes up for auction along with nine stablemates from the Maranello Rosso Collection on Thursday, Aug. 14. Bonhams also just announced it has pushed back the Thursday starting time for its much-anticipated sale (including the GTO) to 5 p.m. from the originally scheduled 2 p.m., in order to accommodate the Pebble Beach Tour of classic cars.

One of the best-kept secrets among the collector car cognoscenti, the Aug. 9-10 Pre-Reunion offers attendees a no-hassle, no crowds, up-close view of most of the same 550 historic race cars that will be racing on track the following week during the "big show" of the Rolex Monterey Motorsports Reunion. The GTO has been under its fourth owner's -- the late Ferrari enthusiast and racer Fabrizio Violati -- custody since 1965, after an early life of hard racing (2nd at the Tour de France) with Jo Schlesser and a fatal crash for his co-driver, Olympic skier Henri Oreiller. Rebuilt by Ferrari and repaired as needed through the next two seasons, it's the 17th 3.0-liter GTO built.

Collector car pundits are confident the GTO will set the new record for a car sold at auction, currently held by the ex-Juan Manuel Fangio 1954 Mercedes W196 which sold for $29.7 million at Bonhams' Goodwood Festival sale last July. How much is anyone's guess, depending on how many billionaires are in the room or on the phone when the hammer's about to strike. While GTOs as a rule are quietly sold in private, this sale allows anybody with the coin -- rather than the connections -- to join a very small and exclusive club of 39 owners. Race-Inspired Challenger, Cougar Sell
At Russo and Steele Newport Beach

Two muscle-car sales at Russo and Steele's 2nd Annual Newport Beach, Calif. auction on June 19-21 stood out for vintage racers -- one costing a ton and the other an apparent steal. At the Newport Dunes Waterfront Resort, the hero car was a 1970 Dodge Challenger TA that sold for a princely $101,750. Presented as one of 10 TX9 models known to exist, this black-on-black Trans Am Challenger was an avowed 36,000-mile survivor with numbers-matching drivetrain, original sheet metal and fender tags. Furthermore, it was also said to have received a recent six-figure restoration, during which two build sheets were discovered. Supporting the low-mileage claim were original seat covers.

On the more affordable side of the equation was a 1967 Mercury Cougar Dan Gurney Special, which sold at no reserve for $9,075. Although the Gurney connection sounds intriguing, distilling the information reveals that this special edition consisted of a standard Cougar with an engine dress-up kit and a Dan Gurney sticker on the rear passenger window. In addition, a reported 15,166 of these were built for the model year. The engine is a four-barrel 289 V8 coupled to a C-4 Select shift Merc-O-Matic that reportedly shifts perfectly. The exterior color is a period-correct Lime Frost paint complimented by black standard bucket seats said to also be in perfect condition.

Mid-Ohio Event to Highlight F-Production Cars

Coming up at the Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course on Sept. 19-21 is an exciting HSR cocktail of sprint and endurance classes, with a special nod to F Production (photo: Art-Racing.com).

Historic Sportscar Racing's all-inclusive road-racing party arrives at the Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course near Lexington on Sept. 19-21 for a combination of sprint, endurance and F-Production races. The RaceLink Sprint Series includes 10 run groups ranging from vintage sports cars to modern-era formula cars, and from American stock cars to recent "Global GT" machines, while the Hawk Performance Endurance Series covers vintage through prototype machines in longer races.

Of particular interest at the event is an F-Production Challenge, whose purpose is to cultivate and support this small-bore class. On the other end of the production-car spectrum, HSR is also promoting a Modern Era Global GT Challenge in Ohio. Group 10 opens the door for later-model cars whose owners want to compete in a fun and safe environment. Models include the BMW M3, Chevy Corvette C5 and C6, Dodge Viper, Ferrari 348, 355, 360, 430 and 458 Challenge, Panoz, and Porsche Boxster, Cayman, 964, 993, 996, 997, 991 and GT3 Cup cars. American Racing Muscle Hits Inaugural Mecum Harrisburg Auction

Mecum's last auction before the upcoming juggernaut Monterey weekend was in Harrisburg, PA over the July 24-27 weekend. Said to be Mecum's largest-ever inaugural consignment collector-car auction, the event reportedly attracted over 20,000 enthusiasts and raked in $21,111,582 in total sales over four days at the Pennsylvania Farm Show Complex and Expo Center. With 735 of the total 1,056 vehicles offered being reported as sold, the auction sell-through rate approached 70 percent.

As usual for an auction that includes everything from postwar pickups to '90s exotics, some digging was required to discover a few tasty racecars mixed in with the stew. Sold at $28,000 was a nice 1969 Chevrolet Nova Yenko replica boasting a 427cid engine and four-speed transmission. You would be hard-pressed to build this car for the price, so whoever bought it got a nice drag-oriented street ride. On the more heavy-duty side was a brawny 1948 GMC COE hauler truck, which would be a strong addition to any vintage paddock.

However five more racing-oriented rides went unsold, and may be still up for adoption today. These included a 1964 Chevy Nova SS Gasser, tube-axle front end and all, that attracted a max bid of $28,500; a 1966 Shelby GT350H rent-a-racer that was bid up to $97,000; and a beautiful 1968 Plymouth Barracuda Sox & Martin replica that attracted $35,000. Moving into the 1970s, a sentimental '70 AMC Javelin Mark Donohue Edition missed finding a buyer at an even $40,000. And finally, a 20-year-old Chevrolet Lumina NASCAR racer attracted only $19,000, with its owner smartly taking it home to await another day and a more appreciative audience.

HSR Classic 24 Hours at Daytona

Classic 24 Hour, HSR and even Trans-Am run groups will all share a memorable five days on Daytona's high banks from November 12-16. The highlight is 24 consecutive hours of vintage sports-car racing on Saturday and Sunday (photo: HSR).


Sanctioned by Historic Sportscar Racing, the Classic 24 Hour at Daytona is scheduled for November 12-16, 2014. Created in celebration of the legendary 24 Hours of Daytona enduro that began in 1966, the classic event is open to all significant sports cars from 1961-2010. Rather than race around the clock -- a massively daunting challenge even for contemporary race teams -- the event offers six different run groups in both daylight and nighttime race sessions to provide the full Daytona 24 experience with only a fraction of the wear and tear.

Besides the Classic 24 run groups, the familiar HSR run groups will be present and racing in their own separate events. The five-day schedule includes a test day on Wednesday, qualifying and practice on Thursday, qualifying and HSR racing on Friday, HSR and Classic 24 racing on Saturday, and Classic 24 racing only on Sunday. Beginning at 1 p.m. on Saturday, there will be 24 nonstop hours of Classic 24 racing, one run group at a time. Trans-Am cars also figure in the action on Wednesday through Saturday only. Motor homes and camping are allowed.
