Weekly News Roundup

Online Motoring Magazine
Published 06/02/2017
Editor's Note

OK, this is it folks! If you are reading this on June 2, then the event is today. We are finally at the induction ceremony for the British Sports Car Hall of Fame. I have made the trip (via the beautiful Blue Ridge Parkway) up to Virginia for the festivities and Moss Motorfest. I will give you full coverage over the next week, so stay tuned. If you are attending the show, make sure to stop by our display as we will be having giveaways and a raffle.

Speaking of the Hall of Fame, we featured the last three of the 23 inductees this week. This week we started out with John Thornley of the MG Company, then moved on to Bob Tullius of Group 44 racing fame, and finally ended with all around great guy and MG guru John Twist. These features have been great fun doing - not only did I get to pay homage to people integral to our hobby, but I got to learn more about them myself - and realized how much more there is to know.

Moving on, we have our Video of the Week. This week we are featuring the Nash Metropolitan. Some people do not even consider the Metropolitan to be a British car, but it is far more British than many in both design and manufacture. Actually, we have three videos on the Met all rolled up in that one article, so give them a look.

In more modern news, we have a few items. First, McLaren announced the promotion of Rob Melville to the position of Design Director. Melville worked at both Jaguar Land Rover and GM in the past. Also, JLR announced additions to their Portland tech incubator. Additionally, Lotus unveiled the new Elise Cup 250.

Please take a look at the other news and events - I have to finish preparing for the ceremonies. Nothing like leaving tasks to the last minute. If you have any questions or comments please shoot me an email.

Take care friends, motor well, read on ...

The Eight Great Phantoms by Rolls-Royce

At the end of July, ‘The Great Eight Phantoms’, a Rolls-Royce Exhibition, will gather together the greatest Phantoms from the last 92 years in Mayfair, London. The Exhibition will welcome the next generation of this most celebrated luxury item. Over the next eight weeks, Rolls-Royce will announce which great Phantoms will journey to London from around the world, telling the stories of these motor cars and the historical events they witnessed. From its debut in 1925, a Rolls-Royce Phantom has stood as witness to history’s most defining moments, from treaty signings to occasions of state and the events that have defined the world we live in today. The conveyance of choice for the world’s most influential and powerful men and women for 92 years, Phantom has stood as a sentinel, silently witnessing moments as significant as The Beatles collecting their honors at Buckingham Palace, Field-Marshal Montgomery driving Churchill and Eisenhower, and numerous global superstars collecting their Oscars. Its standing as the longest existing nameplate in the world of motoring is testament to Phantom’s enduring importance to every generation’s leaders, from heads of state to generals, royalty to rock stars, stars of the silver screen to titans of industry. Lotus Announces Elise Cup 250

Punching well above its weight, the new Lotus Elise Cup 250 offers a scintillating blend of purity of purpose with performance at the apex of the recently revised Elise range. Supercharged, lightweight and distilled from Lotus’ extensive motorsport know-how, the new model packs 243 hp into a chassis designed to deliver the benchmark in responsive handling and haptic feedback. The car’s enhanced aerodynamics come from a number of additions including a new lightweight rear wing, front splitter, bargeboards, and rear diffuser contributing to 125 kg of downforce at 140 mph. As the latest car to receive the Cup treatment, the new Lotus Elise Cup 250 bridges the gap between road and track to offer racecar capabilities in a package that can be used every day. Focused on cutting weight and boosting performance, Lotus’ development team has built on the significant updates introduced for the latest Elise, which has already been hailed as a five-star car by the international motoring press. Dry weight has been reduced to just 884 kg (or 860 kg with all lightweight options) and the adoption of advanced lightweight materials including carbon fibre, titanium and aluminium has helped to cut kilos from crucial areas leading to a [...] Read more...

Costin Lister Takes Win at Brands Hatch

JD Classics – one of the world’s leading classic car specialists – secured a race victory at Brands Hatch over the weekend, to continue its winning streak three events into the season. The team’s legendary Costin Lister was victorious in the Stirling Moss Trophy, with an XK120 supported by JD Classics finishing second-in-class in the Woodcote Trophy. The Costin first took to the track late on Saturday morning for its 30-minute qualifying session. The hard work of JD Classics’ Competition Department, both back at their Maldon HQ and trackside, shone through as Chris Ward drove the Lister to a blistering 1:43.065 time just five laps in. The time proved to unbeatable, with the nearest competitor – a Lotus 15 – still more than two seconds off the pace. The race began with a rolling start, and the JD Classics Costin immediately began pulling away from the pack during the first five laps before an incident brought out the safety car, bunching up the field. By Lap 11 the safety car had returned to the pits, and the Costin Lister was free to race, with the Lotus 15 close behind. The team took the chance to come in for a mandatory [...] Read more...

John Twist – MG Guru & Hall of Fame Inductee

John Twist is the MG guru behind Michigan’s University Motors who has helped countless people maintain, restore, and understand their MGs. He has run a successful shop, has an informative video series, and now is an international speaker. Twist will be inducted into the British Sports Car Hall of Fame on Friday, June 2nd. John’s first MG experience was in high school in Marshall, Michigan. His best friend had received a 1957 MGA from his father, and it was in this MGA that John first rode, first opened a workshop manual, and first was towed by another car. While accompanying his friend to a foreign car workshop in a nearby town to have the SU carburetors adjusted — a task no mere mortal would consider — John spied a gold MG TD in the corner of the workshop. Never especially interested in cars, certainly never a “gearhead,” this MG grabbed his attention — and kept it! He resolved to purchase a MG TD at the earliest opportunity. This was 1964. After a stint in the military, journeys and working in Europe and the US, and many other adventures, Twist opened University Motors as a full-time business on Saturday, January [...] Read more...

JLR Announces Additions to Portland Tech Incubator

Jaguar Land Rover North America has announced that LISNR and PILOT Automotive Labs (PILOT) are the latest start-ups to join its Portland Tech Incubator, which seeks to encourage, promote and support new automotive, mobility and connected car technologies that are being developed by start-ups. LISNR and PILOT bring new expertise to the Incubator team as their research will focus on transmission over audio and Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS) and connected car services. Incubator General Manager, Danielle Alexander, said: The technologies LISNR and PILOT are developing present us with endless opportunities to broaden our scope of knowledge across data transmission and a suite of driver assistance features. We’re excited to spend the next six months working alongside these teams, and looking forward to seeing what comes out of the partnerships. LISNR’s goal is to enhance overall in-car connectivity as it relates to seat personalization, remote app pairing, and keyless access. The company is also working to eliminate the risks of peer-to-peer data transmission over connected devices through its ability to transmit data in an offline environment. PILOT is investing in future technology that offers the ability to apply modern ADAS features to legacy vehicles currently on the roads, improving safety [...] Read more...

Aston Martin Vantage Takes Honors at Nürburgring

Aston Martin Racing survived a dramatic, last-hour torrential downpour to win its class in the 2017 ADAC Nürburgring 24 Hours after dominating the event’s SP8 category with a flawless performance. The #7 Aston Martin Vantage GT8 led its class for much of the race and ran with such metronomic precision that it ran among the more powerful GT3 race cars in higher-specification classes inside the top 30 from the night-time onwards. But factory Aston Martin driver Darren Turner (GB), tasked with bringing home the close-to-production Vantage GT8, featuring the revolutionary Nexcel active oil management system, needed all his vast experience and skill in the final stint to navigate a dramatic late storm that covered a third of the 20.832km Nordschleife circuit in water – threatening to erase all the team’s strong work through the race. In the end team principal David King, and Turner, decided that he should stay out and bring the car home safely in 21st position, rather than pit and risk track position, given the team’s advantage over its competitors. Turner said afterward: When you have heavy rain here, it might only fall on a third of the track. So you really want to wait until it [...] Read more...

VotW – The Inside Story of the Metropolitan

Our video this week is a bit different, as is the car in focus. This week we are featuring the Nash Metropolitan which many do not even consider to be a British car. In that aspect, it may have been years ahead of its time because it prompts us to ask, again, what is a British car? We start with a 1954 filmstrip for dealers ‘The Inside Story of the Metropolitan‘. The Metropolitan was also sold as a Hudson when Nash and Hudson merged in 1954 to form the American Motors Corporation (AMC), and later as a standalone marque during the Rambler years. Additionally, it was actually sold in the United Kingdom and some markets under the Austin brand. We actually have more than one video this week, all dealing with the Metropolitan though. So let’s move on to the second filmstrip for dealers. This one is titled ‘Luxury In Miniature‘ and is from 1959. I am going to pull a bit of the history of the Metropolitan from Wikipedia, so read on for some explanation of this fascinating little car. Nash was positioning this new product for the emerging postwar market for “personal use” autos. These specific use vehicles were [...] Read more...

As Design Director, his new role makes Rob responsible for further developing the company’s design strategy, philosophy, and principles working with the engineering and manufacturing functions, as well as the customer insights team. Robert ‘Bob’ Tullius – Race and Hall of Fame Inductee

Robert ‘Bob’ Tullius is the founder of the famed Group 44 racing team, he won countless races, several championships and paved the way for sponsorship in modern racing. He is undeniably the best known and accomplished American racer of British sports cars. Tullius will be inducted on Friday into the British Sports Call Hall of Fame. Tullius himself started racing in 1961 when he went to driving school in his TR3. After finishing first in driving school, he finished first or second in his first four races and nailed the points championship. From there he moved up to a TR4 provided by Triumph which he built into a race car with the help of fellow competitor Ed Diehl. Despite a few setbacks, his winning streak continued to the point that he left his day job, something most of us dream of, and formed Group 44. As his bio with the SCCA states though, “His real vision, however, was in founding Group 44 Inc. In 1962, there was no model to follow – no prep shop, no race team servicing customers. Bob and his team worked with partners Triumph, MG, British Leyland, Quaker State and Goodyear to create a first class, professional organization. Group [...] Read more...

McLaren P1 LM Sets Nurburgring Record

In June 2016, the P1 LM was launched at Goodwood Festival of Speed, where it became the fastest road car to tackle the Goodwood Hill. Over the past eleven months, as the five P1 LM production cars have been built, the identical prototype XP1LM road car has been testing. During the final phases at Nurburgring Nordschleife, XP1LM achieved a fastest lap of 6.43.2. After setting this new lap record, the car then drove directly from Nurburgring back home to the UK. This project is the latest collaboration between Lanzante and Kenny Brack. Kenny Brack is known for his 1999 Indianapolis 500 win, 1998 Indy racing win and recent gold medal at the 2009 rally-x during the x-games. Lanzante first became globally synonymous with the McLaren name when it ran the semi-works Mclaren F1 GTR that won the 24 Hours of Le Mans in 1995. The project also received support from McLaren and Pirelli who made a specific size and compound road legal Trofeo tire for the P1 LM. The P1 LM road car is intended to be the quickest, rarest, and last of the P1 variants. All five P1 LMs are sold and will be used in the USA, Japan, [...] Read more...

John Thornley – MG Leader & Hall of Fame Inductee

John Thornley, OBE was one of the founders of the MG Car Club and served as its first Secretary. Later, he went on to become Director and General Manager of the MG Car Company. John Thornley will be inducted into the British Sports Car Hall of Fame in ceremonies on June 2, 2017. John Thornley’s first MG was an M-Type he bought in 1930, and soon after he met with two other enthusiasts and formed the MG Car Club. John went to Abingdon and managed to get Cecil Kimber to authorize the MG logo for the club’s badge. He was at this time an accountant in London, but he then persuaded Kimber to give him an office at the MG Factory to run the fledgling MGCC and he moved to Abingdon. However, another part of the job at MG was as assistant to the service manager, John Temple, who was shortly afterward appointed competitions manager, and John thus inherited the Service Manager’s position. Jaguar XJ220 25th Anniversary at Silverstone Classic

Special plans to celebrate the 25th anniversary of the remarkable Jaguar XJ220 at this summer’s Silverstone Classic (28-30 July) have moved up a gear with confirmation that two of the key inspirational figures behind the sensational supercar, Jim Randle and Keith Helfet, will both be joining the silver jubilee festivities. Keith Helfet’s timeless Jaguar XJ220 design As Engineering Director at Jaguar, Randle was the mastermind behind what is still the fastest, most exciting and most expensive road-going Jaguar ever created. Helfet was Jaguar’s senior sports car designer and the brains behind the XJ220’s stunning – and astonishingly ageless – styling. The two leading lights were recently reunited at Don Law Racing in Staffordshire, the world-renowned family-run organization that has assumed global responsibility for the XJ220 having taken over the business from JaguarSport. Amazingly, it was the first time either Randle or Helfet had visited Don Law’s thriving enterprise, so it was an emotional experience for all parties. More so, as there were no fewer than 22 XJ220s in situ undergoing various renovations, some amazingly with just delivery mileage on their odometers. “It’s absolutely extraordinary what Don and his team are doing,” enthused Randle. “To have so many cars here is [...] Read more...

Re: Philadelphia MG Club 2017 Annual BBQ Picnic

Rich Williamson

Sorry, I am coming into this late due to my crazy schedule these days…  I have obviously been absent for some time...

Is this intended to be a club after party following the Oakburn show?

How would we get perishable side dishes to your house if we are going to the show?

Thanks

Rich
