Re: fuel tank-repair or replace???

Roger Williams

Hi Ryan

I was faced with the same problem with my Cooper S tanks.  My tanks did not have a leak or holes and I did not want to use an etch & sealer so I opted for a simple low cost DIY approach.

I filled my tank with vinegar and let sit for 3-4 days.  All, rust was gone.  Then rinsed with distilled water followed by acetone.  Since my tanks might sit for a while it was suggested I coat the inside with 2-stroke engine oil to prevent re-rust.

Ryan,

You might try the fuel tank etchant and sealer from Bill Hersch Automotive. They used to advertise in Hemmings. Probably a lot cheaper and worth trying before spending money on repair or replacing.
